HOW TO READ MANGA
Udon Kids titles are translated manga presented in their original reading format. This means that the stories read from right to left instead of left to right. The panels, word balloons and sound effects are reversed from the English norm.
Not only does this keep the artwork and storytelling the way the original creators intended, it’s also a strong way to keep young readers focused on the relationship of words and pictures in each panel. Readers are less likely to skim through material or skip panels when their brain is given a bit of an extra challenge, like following a maze.
With almost all of the translated manga on the market now being published in its original right-left format, UDON Kids manga is a great introduction to this reading style, opening up young readers to a wide array of future potential titles.
Follow along with our helpful numbered page and you’ll see how each manga page flows from right to left, panel by panel. At first it may seem a bit confusing, but all it takes is a bit of practice. Once you get used to it, reading Japanese style is a snap!
